Detours Music offers a choice of recording
possibilities for anyone wishing to make an audio
recording, e.g. rock bands, brass bands, solo
artists, the spoken word, audio drama, adverts, etc.

How
much do Detours Music charge for recording and manufacturing a CD?
Every project is custom made, therefore it
is impossible to publish accurate pricing details. Detours Music is a
small business that caters for bands and artistes with smaller budgets
than the big guns. We pride ourselves on recognising each of our
customers as individuals with feelings, and we take the time to learn
what type of product the customer really wants, and needs, and then we
can put a price to the project.
Sound Engineering
Detours Music uses the services of the rock
band Detours' sound engineer and studio session musician, Paul Adshead.
Paul has thirty years experience as a professional sound engineer, but
is incredibly modest and underplays his achievements and incredible
talent. However, we will
name drop a few of the artistes that he has recorded during his career,
just so that potential customers are aware of the safe, professional
hands they would be in, should their project be given the go ahead. Some
of his past transgressions include:
Def Leppard, Rush, Lisa Stansfield, Billy Ocean, Simple Minds, Sir Harry
Secombe, George Hamilton, Joy Division, The Dooleys, The Fairey Band
with Major Peter Parkes, Englebert Humperdinck, Jim Shepherd, Richard
Thompson, Cannon and Ball, The Czechoslavakian National Orchestra, Bill
Tarmey, Asia, The Five Penny Piece, Clive Gregson, Jilted John (the
single Gordon Is A Moron), Bernard Manning, Houghton Weavers, The
Mossley Band, Granada TV, BBC TV and Radio, most UK FM radio stations,
US radio, Shell UK, the A Saddleworth Christmas and
Sounds Of Saddleworth
albums, and of course, the fabulous Detours!!!
Location
If you are situated within easy enough travelling distance of
Saddleworth, then for brass bands and rock bands after that live sound
we hire Denshaw Village Hall for the recording process. This is because
it is convenient for us, keeps the cost down dramatically, and the sound
and whole recording experience is excellent. For acoustic artists, or
anyone happy to use drum sampling, we use Detours Music's sound
engineer's home studio in Denshaw, Saddleworth. However, we will of
course contemplate travelling, or hiring a specific studio of your
choice, but be prepared for price increases under such circumstances.
Artwork
If you have an album cover already designed, please supply a top quality
resolution file on CDrom, or e mail it to us. This will naturally keep
the price of the project down. However, if you would like us to design a
cover and inlay ourselves, please give us as much information as
possible to work from in order to give you a quote. Please supply any
logos and photos you wish to use, and advise us of which fonts to use,
how many sides the booklet should be, and whether you'd like clear or
black trays, single or jewel cases.
Other points to consider
for the text on your artwork:
A
lbum
title, essay on artist, logos, text fonts, names and instruments of band
members, including conductor for brass bands, photo(s), photography
credits,
track listing with details of composers, copyrights and publishings,
location and date of recording. Engineering,
editing, mixing and mastering credits, CD inlay and disc artwork
credits, copyright details including year and symbol, "all
rights of the producer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved,
unauthorised copying, public performance, broadcasting, hiring or
rentalof this recording
prohibited," any “special thanks” or “hellos”
and the website address
of artist.
Copyright, and
royalties for cover versions
If you plan to record cover versions, i.e. other people's songs, then
you will need to apply for a license from MCPS (The Mechanical and
Copyright Protection Society Ltd).
We will assist you all we can with this.
When a copy is made of a music recording
it generates a music royalty which should be paid to the person who
wrote the piece of music. This is called a Mechanical Royalty.
Anyone making even a single copy without copyright
owner's permission is breaking the law. If you are recording a piece of
music in any form, then you need to gain the permission of the copyright
owner of the music and pay a fee in return for its use. See our
LINKS
page for further details on MCPS, under BBC OneMusic.
